Executive Summary

NACCE is proud to collaborate with HP to explore the role of technology and on-line learning in delivering entrepreneurship education in the form of HP LIFE e-Learning within the community college setting. This proposal is soliciting 6 faculty members to implement HP LIFE in their Fall 2013 class.

NACCE Faculty Ambassadors for HP LIFE

NACCE is proud to collaborate with HP to explore the role of technology and on-line learning in delivering entrepreneurship education in the form of HP LIFE e-Learning within the community college setting. For this pilot program, we have selected six community college faculty members to implement HP LIFE into their fall 2013 classes:

Madisonville Community College, Madisonville, KY

Darcie Tumey, Business Administration Instructor
Catawba Valley Community College, Hickory, NC

Otis White, Faculty Chair – Business & Public Administration
Rio Salado College, Tempe, AZ

These Faculty Ambassadors were chosen based on their vast array of experience and commitment to enriching the lives of community college students. In August, the team was able to meet face-to-face for an in depth training session in Waltham, Massachusetts. The training was graciously hosted by Education Development Center (EDC), who has been partnering with HP to create HP LIFE e-learning.

Throughout our time together, the team was able to discuss their individual experiences as community college faculty, and work together to determine the most effective ways to integrate HP LIFE e-learning into their fall coursework.

Over the next six months, the HP LIFE Faculty Ambassadors will be sharing their experiences with us though several blog posts on the NACCE website. They will also be featured panelists in a breakout session at NACCE’s 11th Annual Conference. Background on HP LIFE

HP, a global technology firm, understands the value of technology as an efficient and effective way to create and maintain communities with continual economic growth. As part of its Social Innovation focus, HP has created a free online series of modules for nascent and aspiring entrepreneurs called HP Learning Initiative for Entrepreneurs (HP LIFE) e-Learning.This global, cloud based program offers aspiring entrepreneurs and small business-owners valuable business skills and IT training. Since the launch of HP LIFE e-learning, more than 50,000 users registered from over 200 countries and territories. Designed for a range of literacy and multiple languages (English, Spanish, French and soon Arabic), HP LIFE e-learning blends evidence-based content with highly interactive virtual coaching, mentoring, and social interaction. Upon successful completion of each module, students receive a certificate of completion.

NACCE’s Partnership with HP LIFE

NACCE will bring HP LIFE e-Learning resources and insights to the community college campus and explore how these tools can be utilized to foster innovation, enable business starts and create jobs. We also seek to understand how the use of technology (content, networks) in the classroom adds value to the current entrepreneurship education classroom experience and advance our understanding of how community colleges can capitalize on trends such as:

  • Student entrepreneurs are most responsive to experiential learning when learning about how to start a business
  • Collaboration among entrepreneurs adds value to all since entrepreneurs seek community with other entrepreneurs and a desire to share best practices
  • Technology is a constant in student’s lives
  • Life-long learning is a necessity in an entrepreneur’s life
  • Many students are entering the community college classroom after mid-career layoffs to start a business
  • Given the rise of technology, a business owners market is not limited to the local economy
  • Technology is a critical part of classroom learning

What We Hope to Learn

The goal of the exploration is to understand how e-learning can:

  • Enhance entrepreneurial education for current students of entrepreneurship who are small business owners or aspire to create their own enterprise
  • Enhance entrepreneurial education for current students of non-entrepreneurship disciplines who may become small business owners (hair stylists, mechanics)
  • Foster community among students, new business owners and existing business owners – some of who may be community college alumni locally and globally
  • Partner with faculty to deliver quality courses
  • As a result of enhancing education and fostering community, increase the number of business starts and job created

NACCE and HP anticipate that the impact of on-line learning in the community college classroom will lead to improved student learning outcomes, increased job possibilities, and enriched teaching experiences via curriculum possibilities & pedagogies.
