David Hughes grew up in Asheville, NC and currently resides in Washington, DC where he has been a small business development analyst for the Appalachian Regional Commission since 1997. Before moving to Washington, David completed work on a Master’s degree in Geography and also worked for Appalachian State University in Boone, NC as a telecommunications program manager at ASU’s Broyhill Institute for Business Development. While at ASU, he served as an adjunct faculty member in the Department of Geography and Planning.
He began his career in the private sector, working for American and European ski equipment manufacturers and as a retail ski shop manager and buyer. During his first ten years at ARC, he oversaw the activities of ARC’s Export Trade Advisory Council, leading a trade mission to Mexico for 18 Appalachian firms and managing a large ARC-sponsored exhibition of Appalachian wood products and home furnishings at the Ideal Home Show in London, UK. Today, David provides technical assistance to over 125 business incubators located throughout the Appalachian Region, reviews and manages projects promoting the development of local food systems and value-added agriculture, and serves as the point of contact for the ARC Area Development programs in the states of Tennessee and Alabama. Much of his free time is taken up with renovation projects involving his 120 year old rowhouse in Washington, DC.
