Diane Sabato and Gail Olmsted, both from Springfield Technical Community College (STCC) in Springfield, MA, presented at the 2008 Faculty Conference on Entrepreneurship at Howard University in Washington, DC recently. Their workshop, “Infusing Your Curriculum with Entrepreneurship Themes,” was part of a three-day conference put on by ELI–Howard Business School’s Institute for Entrepreneurship, Leadership & Innovation. ELI is a national resource committed to the growth and development of minority small business enterprises.

In December 2003, Howard University was one of eight institutions selected by the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation in a nationwide competition to receive a multi-million-dollar grant as part of its Kauffman Campuses Initiative to develop an entrepreneurial climate across campus. The program seeks to transform the way entrepreneurship is taught and experienced so any student, regardless of their field of study, will have the opportunity to participate. With matching support from Howard University and other partners, the Entrepreneurship, Leadership and Innovation Institute (ELI) was created and has worked diligently to enhance existing programs and establish new ones in four major focus areas: academic programs; research; business and community development; and entrepreneurial thought. The ELI Institute, in collaboration with faculty, students, business owners and community and faith-based organizations, seeks to make entrepreneurial education available to all persons, regardless of their field of study.

Ms. Sabato is director of the Entrepreneurial Institute at STCC. She is responsible for a continuum of programs in entrepreneurship education and student business incubation, providing lifelong learning opportunities to K-16 students throughout western Massachusetts.

Ms. Olmsted is an assistant professor at STCC’s School of Business & Information Technology. She teaches courses in entrepreneurship and marketing and serves as the liaison with the Scibelli Enterprise Center.

The two have collaborated on a number of workshops and speaking presentations at local conferences as well as at NACCE conferences in Kansas City, Las Vegas, Orlando and San Antonio. Additionally, they were part of the STCC contingent that traveled to Belfast, Northern Ireland, in 2006.
