Professor Donna Duffey of Johnson County Community College to Receive Honor

Springfield, MA – Dec. 2, 2008 – Johnson County Community College (JCCC) faculty member Donna Duffey has been selected as the Faculty of the Year Award winner by the National Association for Community College Entrepreneurship (NACCE). The honor is given annually to a community college educator who inspired students through teaching entrepreneurship. Duffey is a professor and career program facilitator at the Overland Park, KS, school.

As the winner, Duffey will be flown to the Sixth Annual NACCE Conference, Understanding the Value: Entrepreneurship Education, Economic Development and Fundraising, in Anaheim, CA, from January 4-7, 2009. She will be awarded $1,000, and JCCC also will receive $1,000 to support its entrepreneurship programs.

Duffey was nominated by fellow faculty member Barbara Millard, who is an assistant professor of Entrepreneurship at JCCC. Duffey assumed leadership for the Entrepreneurship Program at JCCC in 2003 and quickly created a program that has become a model for community college entrepreneurship programs nationwide.

Millard wrote in her nomination that: “In 2003, Donna successfully obtained funding from the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation as one of seven community colleges awarded a grant for continued growth of entrepreneurship programming. The JCCC proposal included ‘giving back’ by way of sharing curriculum and programming with other colleges within the state and nationally. To that end, Donna has made over 40 group presentations nationwide and given her time for countless individual “sharing” sessions about the development of the JCCC entrepreneurship program and how that model can be utilized by others.”

“As the nomination indicates, Donna Duffey’s impact on the field of community college entrepreneurship goes far beyond her own institution,” said Heather Van Sickle, executive director of NACCE. “Donna is an exceptionally active and valuable member of NACCE and is always willing to devote time to sharing her expertise across our organization. We are very pleased that she is receiving this well-deserved honor.”
