Edgecombe Community College has been named one of only eight community colleges in North Carolina to administer a new program to assist workers who’ve lost their job start their own business.

GATE – Growing America Through Entrepreneurship – is being directed in Edgecombe and surrounding counties through the Small Business Center at ECC. North Carolina is one of only four participating states.

The GATE program began in April 2009 and is funded by the U.S. Department of Labor. GATE will operate as a scholarship program, with up to 750 scholarships likely to be awarded in North Carolina.

Selected laid-off or dislocated workers from rural counties will be eligible for individual training and coaching related to starting and running a business.
