Bristol Community College is opening its new center for "green” courses in the same building that once hosted hundreds of manufacturing jobs.
The Green Center, as the new location is called, was created in the five-story brick mill building on Davol Street that once served as the headquarters for Quaker Fabrics. Where there was once old fabrics machinery is now learning space for teaching electricians how to install solar panels or for students to learn to install insulation.
"It’s not a typical classroom, so a mill building lent itself to our needs,” said Julia Gold, the director of the Green Center.
BCC’s space on the mill’s second floor is wide open, with room for demonstrations and props for learning home weatherization or solar panel installation. "It’s really unique to have this kind of resource,” Gold said.
