Local business giants give entrepreneurs sound advice

Future entrepreneurs, looking for advice in bringing their ideas to market, heard from three of the region's successful business owners at the annual Entrepreneurs Awards ceremony at Bristol Community College last week.
"Sometimes it's a matter of beginning with the end in mind," Monte Ferris, owner of the Venus de Milo in Swansea, advised the audience, after being honored as the leading Cornerstone Entrepreneur for 2010.
Ferris, who heads up the well-known Swansea function hall, was recognized for his work there as well as his success in turning around additional business ventures, such as the Quality Inn and Jillian's Sports Pub & Grill, both in Somerset.
In both of these ventures, Ferris has not laid off employees, despite a recession and one of the worst economies since the depression, according to his award biography.
Ferris told the audience of potential entrepreneurs that one of the most important steps one can take when starting a new venture is to have a vision of the finished product and to be guided by that vision.
He suggested innovators "think and plan well and list the objectives that will get you there, while keeping in mind the obstacles that can prevent you from getting there."
