Many great things have happened for Mike Callaway since he won the grand prize in last year's SpiritBank/Tulsa Community College Entrepreneurial Spirit Award competition.

His Sapulpa-based company, Cal-Tech Global LLC, could triple its sales this year, and he has hired a full-time employee and two part-time workers. Before, he was handling most of the work himself.

Callaway's company makes a product called Sulfabate, which removes poisonous and corrosive hydrogen sulfide from sour natural gas for natural gas producers.

He encourages other entrepreneurs to consider entering this year's contest, which officially kicked off Tuesday.

"You never know what could happen," Callaway said during a phone interview. "I certainly didn't expect to win when I first started, but due to the coaching and encouragement ... it really did help me out.

"It comes down to networking, contacting. You get a lot of people on your team, so to speak, and they all want to see you be successful."

Once again, Spirit Award organizers are seeking winning business ideas. On Tuesday, entrepreneurs gathered at TCC's Northeast Campus to learn more about the fifth annual competition and receive some hands-on coaching and mentoring.
