Pre-Conference Workshops


NEW - NACCE MASTER Class*
Applying Effectuation: Using the Entrepreneurial Method to Lead a Community College

October 12th – 10am – 4pm 

Audience: Presidents, Administrators, Internal Team Dedicated to Entrepreneurship 

Master Class Goal:
 In this interactive, how-to session with Effectuation founder Dr. Saras Sarasvathy, Presidents and at least one entrepreneurial champion from their staff will learn how to use the entrepreneurial method to lead their college and create new opportunities.   

Workshop Takeaways:
  • What is effectuation? 
  • What are the benefits of thinking with an entrepreneurial mindset?  
  • How does it apply to leading a college?
  • How does effectuation fit with other entrepreneurial approaches?  
  • How do I build a culture where all staff know how and want to think effectually? 
  • How can I apply entrepreneurial thinking to my interactions with students, faculty, staff, and the community?  
  • Can an entrepreneurial mindset co-exist with bureaucracy?   

Pre-Work:
To get the most out of the Master Class, we strongly encourage you to complete pre-work. For any applying for Coleman Foundation funding, these elements are a requirement of the proposal (full information found here). For any not applying to the Coleman Foundation for funding, please complete this pre-work information in preparation for the Master Class. Don’t invest the cost of the class and not do the pre-work! We will not turn you away at the door if you have not done the pre-work, however, you will derive much greater value from your time investment when you bring this pre-work to the Master Class.

Vet-a-run: Developing a Business Model Canvas for Deploying Entrepreneurial Support for Veterans and Active Duty Services Members

 

October 12th – 9am – 12pm

Audience: Presidents, Administrators, Faculty, Center Directors, Internal Teams

 

Seminar Goal: Veteran entrepreneurs are a thriving part of the U.S. economy.  Find out about opportunities for potential growth and what local community and technical colleges are doing to support veteran entrepreneurs on their campuses, as well as what state and federal resources are available to provide guidance and direction for college partners.

 

The first part of the workshop will begin with NACCE member colleges sharing their emerging best practices on working with and supporting veteran entrepreneurs, both students on campus and veteran entrepreneurs returning to their local communities.

The second part of the workshop will focus on state and federal resources available to provide guidance and direction for college partners.  Such resources will include Operation Boots to Business: From Service to Startup, Entrepreneurship Boot Camp for Veterans with Disabilities, Women Veterans Igniting the Spirit of Entrepreneurship (V-WISE), e200 Native America, and Native American Veteran's Outreach.

 

Workshop Takeaways:
  • Statistics on Veteran Entrepreneurs.
  • Examples of college-based programming and events, in addition to lean business model canvas templates to develop next steps for veteran entrepreneurship.
  • Strategies for leveraging existing campus Veteran’s Service Offices for entrepreneurial initiatives.
  • Insight into applying for grants and developing proposal content.
  • Opportunities for collaboration between non-credit and credit college programs.
  • Approaches for engagement of regional community college partners.

Building Your Brand as a College that Drives the Entrepreneurial Ecosystem

October 12th – 1pm – 4pm

Audience: Administrators, Small Business Center / Incubators Directors

 

Seminar Goal: This workshop will focus on the fifth NACCE Presidents for Entrepreneurship Action Step - Create Buzz and Broad Exposure of your College's Commitment to Entrepreneurship. This interactive session will give you the tools you need to create buzz as well as community of practitioners who will support as you return to campus to make some strategic noise.

A critical step in creating a buzz is defining your brand. In the first part of the workshop, you will develop your brand within your own entrepreneurial ecosystem. Then you will practice engaging your stakeholders. In the second half of the workshop, you will develop a plan to create buzz in your community and via PR/social media.
