Congrats Algonquin College

L - R: Dr. Gene Giovannini, Immediate Past Chair of NACCE, Chancellor of Tarrant County College District, Ms. Cheryl Jensen, President of Algonquin College, and Dr. Rebecca Corbin, President & CEO of NACCE

Last week, we announced the winners of our 2018 Presidents for Entrepreneurship Pledge (PFEP) College of Excellence Award Winners
Today we want to highlight how Algonquin College is doing an outstanding job creating and expanding internal and external teams dedicated to entrepreneurship. We asked nominator, Leanna Verrucci, Managing Director, Innovation and Entrepreneurship, IgniteAC Centre at Algonquin College to share her thoughts.

Tell us how your college has demonstrated excellence in this area.

"Since the recruitment of an Executive-in-Residence to promote entrepreneurship at the College (2013), the entrepreneurship team has grown to 2 full-time, 2 part-time and dozens of volunteer student and faculty ambassadors, all working tirelessly, each day, to achieve our President's goal to instill in every student and embed in every program a culture of innovation and entrepreneurship. The IgniteAC team will only grow, and strengthen, with our move to our new $45M building this summer."

How do you measure and document success?

"We measure success by how many students, faculty, staff and alumni we EXPOSE to and ENGAGE and ENABLE in, entrepreneurship. Measurement happens in both a quantitative (number of events, attendees, mentorship hours, external partnerships, in-class presentation etc.) and a qualitative manner (testimonials, surveys, word of mouth, etc.). In each case, we define the objectives, collect, analyze, evaluate the data and then refine the initiative or program based on the findings."

Want some of Algonquin's secret sauce. From reading, it appears the difference maker was a new EIR. Given authority one person can indeed make a big difference. Usually volunteer, we recommend colleges consider making the position a paid one to see consistent push for improvement. ERI should have a direct line to the college President who took the pledge.
