The Power of Diversity

"Last December, I visited with NACCE Board member Pam Eddinger, president of Bunker Hill Community College in Boston, to discuss strategies for growing membership. During our conversation, she encouraged me to think about how diversity and equity related to entrepreneurship and if NACCE should be more focused in this area. With community colleges being the most diverse and inclusive segment of higher education in the United States, supporting and engaging a diverse set of learners and leaders is essential to providing a skilled workforce of the future."

Rebecca, I just taught a class on Diversity in the workplace. My inspiration was the book, Culturally Responsive Teaching and the Brain by Zoretta Hammond. It was an awesome class. After explaining how our cultural biases make us view what we see, we then dived into dimensions of diversity. I got my studnets into groups of ageism, diversity based on religion, national origin, language, disability, gender, sexual orientation etc. My students analyzed visuals, read a current case study on each and then did a role playing exercise.
