This 2-Part Professional Development Series meets January 21st and January 23rd from 1-3PM ET
Overview:
Day 1: Understanding Workplace Bullying
Time: 2 hours
Part 1: What It Is

Welcome and Introductions. The facilitator will introduce the workshop, share the mission of ByeByeBully, and briefly introduce the team.

The History and Definition of Workplace Bullying. This section will cover the evolution of the term and its key characteristics, including repeated negative acts over a period of time that lead to a power imbalance.

Exercise: A brief, facilitated discussion where participants share their initial thoughts or misconceptions about workplace bullying.

Differentiating Bullying from Harassment. This session will clarify the legal and practical differences between the two, using a chart to illustrate the distinction.

Exercise: A quick Q&A session to check for understanding.

Part 2: How It Impacts

The Target and Bystander. This part will discuss the characteristics of those targeted by bullies and the role of the bystander.

Personal Story. The facilitator shares a personal story of being a target of workplace bullying to humanize the topic and create a safe space for sharing.

Breakout Session: Sharing Stories. Participants will be divided into small breakout groups (3-4 people) to share their experiences of being a target and/or a bystander.
Part 3: Wrap-up

Discussion and Debrief. The larger group will reconvene to discuss common themes from the breakout sessions, without sharing specific personal stories. This will be a safe space to process and validate emotions.

Looking Ahead. A brief overview of what will be covered on Day 2, including actionable strategies and next steps.
Day 2: What to Do
Time: 2 hours
Part 1: Organizational Culture and Prevention

The Organizational Climate. This segment will introduce types of organizational climate and explain how each can impact bullying.

Breakout Session: Assessing Your Department. Participants will use the organizational climate model to assess their own department's culture.
Part 2: Taking Action

Being Your Own Advocate. This part will provide practical advice on how to respond to bullying behaviors.

Role-Playing Crucial Conversations. This is a practical exercise where participants will pair up to practice a difficult conversation.

Developing Policies & Procedures | Organizational Deployment. This part will review a best practice policy addressing workplace bullying, discuss ideas for creating one at their organization and strategies for organizational deployment.
Part 3: Tying It All Together

Open Discussion. The larger group will have a final opportunity to ask questions and share key takeaways.

Commitment to Change. A final reflection on what each participant will personally do to create a more civil and safe workplace. The facilitator will end on a strong, motivating note, emphasizing that "Doing nothing is not an option."

Karen Bathanti
Karen Bathanti is a Senior Human Resources professional with over 25 years of leadership experience. Throughout her career, she has collaborated with senior management to conduct strategic HR planning that aligns with corporate goals and objectives, driving successful outcomes. In addition to her extensive HR background, Karen is deeply committed to addressing workplace bullying, an issue that she believes can have profound impacts on an individual’s mental and emotional health. Karen has been instrumental in advocating for policies that foster respect, inclusivity, and accountability, ensuring that employees have the opportunity to succeed in a safe, supportive, and empowering environment. Karen’s passion for bullying prevention extends beyond her work in HR. She also collaborated with her friend and colleague, Nancy Finazzo, and formed Bye Bye Bully, a company dedicated to informing our communities about the negative impacts of workplace bullying and providing a voice for targets.

Nancy Finazzo, PhD
Dr. Finazzo was a target of workplace bullying, fueling her dedication to eradicating this pervasive issue and equipping individuals and organizations with effective strategies for prevention and intervention. Her qualitative dissertation, The Impact of Bullying on Women Administrators in Higher Education: A Phenomenological Study, explores the lived experiences of women targeted by bullying from other women. Drawing from both research and personal experience, Dr. Finazzo offers deep expertise in identifying workplace bullying, understanding its effects on targets, bystanders, and organizational culture, and implementing practical solutions to foster healthier work environments. Since 2011, Dr. Finazzo has served as a consultant coach for Achieving the Dream, a national community college student success network, where she has honed her expertise in guiding teams to success. Her proficiency in data analytics, strategic planning, quality improvement, and student success strategies brings a unique perspective and depth of knowledge to her work.
